i found no humor in the situation. i didnt like to feel lost when i was walking. only by giving him an opportunity would i know if he was leading me astray. too bad my belief in people was how i navigated throughout life.
"stop talking. we're almost there." toby mutters bitterly.
Okay then. he forcefully grabs me by the arm unhappy that i couldn't do what he wanted and play along. it didnt matter if i bickered. toby made it abundantly clear he was not letting go of me.
Fine then.
after trying and failing to pry his claw-like fingers off of me i'd struggled to maintain his speedy stride yet somehow i'd managed to keep from tripping.
toby looks behind us to make sure we weren't followed and opens a random door pulling me in with him. "hurry up." he locks us in grunting about my weight.
"Sooorrry." i roll my eyes ignoring his hurtful comment. Geez, i knew i was heavy but did he have to be mean?
toby pulls me deeper inside the large room.
i grunt following after him.
there was simply no way i could break free and i wasn't happy about it. when he finally gained some sense and let me go i was going to run. forget toby. heck, forget mankind. they were not going to lock me up against my will. i had rights dammit.
i could walk by myself just fine thank you very much. it appeared to me that somebody needed a refresher course to be reminded that handling me like some hacky sack was not okay even if his intentions were in the right place.
sure i was used to his peculiar mood swings but never to the point where i actually was scared to be around him.
"wheres the headmistress?" toby barks out loud to someone who was sitting on a leather chair while he dragged me painfully by the wrist.
tobys grip was firmly attached to my skin never once dislodging a finger by accident.my hand felt like it would pop off any second and my ankles hurt from all the intense speed walking.
since i was unable to shake him loose i had no choice but to look around. i didn't recognize where toby was taking me.
calculating off-hand the room was large enough to become lost in like a corn maze at a pumpkin city fair. there were iron statues in every corner, tall shelves filled with old spines i did not recognize, and weird symbols painted in deliberate order on the walls.
the perfect home for a cult. great, i was inside what was close to the home of satan. just freaking fantastic.
i was so focused on how detailed the symbols were that i accidentally tripped bumping into tobys back. "sorry." i mumble turning red from embarrassment.
toby looks at me over his shoulder. geez. what was he so worked up over?
his fiery blue eyes narrowed into angry slits and his lips set into an exasperated line.
for a second there i feared he might spank me. yikes! i felt like a hysterical chicken with its head cut off.
"are you always so clumsy?" he grunts walking especially faster now.
i suppress any urges i had to protest that he slow it down since it wouldn't do any good. he was already mad at me and i didn't want to make things worse.
besides, he was no good at taking orders from me. the stubborn goat.
after a couple of minutes toby finally stops walking.
surprisingly he lets go of my arm with careful instructions that i stay put behind him. i snort. what was i three years old again?
from what i could see there were a handful of tables surrounding us including sofas that i presumed decoration only because the material looked expensive. angels with attitude had style. after all i'd seen somehow that didn't come as a surprise.
curious i peek from behind tobys back.
other then a slim leather leg swinging in the air i couldn't see much.
when toby catches me staring i grin sheepishly and look away. gosh he was scary when he wanted to be.
something was bothering me. i didn't understand why he was keeping me hidden. there was no point since according to him i was somehow involved.
to show toby that he couldn't boss me around i step out of his shadow and stand to his left ignoring the scowl on tobys face. too bad. toby was just going to have to deal with it. i finally had a good look at the 'person' who sat on the chair.
"she went out." it was joshua sitting down with his legs over the armrest.
joshua looks at toby with very little interest. "apparently cleaning up some idiots mess." he says casually flipping a page to his magazine. "as if we need the humies to get mixed up with those damned archons." joshua sneers vehemently.
joshua didnt seem like a big fan of reading. judging by the name on the cover it was a catalog for throwing knives.
i get scared when joshua looks up from his magazine all of a sudden as if he'd just realized toby was not alone.
i stood frozen with fear unable to move. sure, maybe i was curious before and did the opposite of what toby had said.
but i'd wanted so badly to show toby i could handle myself that it never occurred to me why he wanted to keep me safe.
in the daytime joshua looked like your typical popular kid. Right now he seemed downright dangerous. those weapons strapped on him made him straight up lethal.
somehow, i got the impression joshua was not a stand-up guy who cared about things like truth and honor. there wasn't enough time in the world for me to back peddle away and slip behind toby for joshua had already laid eyes on me.
first he grimaces at toby with a sneer then he turns my way with an eyebrow raised. that tattoo on his face, yeah it grew a whole inch when joshua became animated to a more scary face. "whats with the girl?" joshua grins devilishly.
i fight the urge to roll my eyes. riiiiight. he was too drunk to remember we met before.
despite his unchanging demeanor i could feel toby grow tense right beside me.
if joshua speculated toby was in a hellish mood he didn't let on.
"forget about that." toby was harsh with joshua getting to the point of his sudden arrival. "look, we need to get a handle on this and fast."
joshua takes a quick glance at me shrugging as if he were bored. his biceps flexing involuntarily. "why don't you just make her forget?"
on the inside i start to freak out big time. i didn't like the idea of someone playing with my head just to keep me silent.
i mean, all they had to do was ask. i knew how to keep a secret. ask chanel.
"can't. its a long story." toby says dismissing the idea rather immediately.
i let out a breath of air that i was holding. i had to thank toby later for not being experimented on.
joshua sits up forgetting about his magazine for the moment. it laid on the armrest next to the nunchucks. "did you forget that i love a good story?" joshua leaned forward smirking at toby and cracked his knuckles. what looked like runes from the devils handbook inked all over his fingers.
"humor me." joshua said daring toby.
i made sure to keep my face blank so that they wouldn't know just how fearful and panicked i felt.
sure, i may have acquired an unhealthy streak of curiosity but i was no fool.
heck yeah i was scared stiff. uneasy and tense was more like it.
and if it ever came up i wouldn't deny that i stood still with cold feet like a little girl. i would have rather been cornered with my back against the wall than facing a devilish hellcat that inflicted pain for kicks and jolly's.
i was rattled and tense for a damn good reason. at all times joshua proved his heartless nature. when the angels lips stretched an inch it revealed just how fiendish and inhumane he was.
and when toby forcefully tugged me over to one of the leather seats because my feet were too stiff to move on there own accord i didn't protest as i sat on one of the stiff ottomans while toby recounted the initial distressing shock closing at our traipse out of the woods.
i'd noticed with relief that toby remained tight-lipped about our little 'talk'. keeping it between us made it all the more personal.
Joshua didn't move once during tobys recall of events. i was nervous because joshua didn't say a word as he looked at me briefly from time to time.
finally, joshua leaned back in his chair still not convinced that i was innocent in all of this. "no offense, sweetheart but for all we know you could be an archon sent to spy on us."
i didn't like to be defined as something i wasn't. sure, i may not have recognized that particular word but i knew enough to understand when i was being put down.
i narrowed my eyes at joshua. "what did you just call me?" somehow i felt like i should have been more offended by what he just said.
"relax i haven't settled a concrete angle in my approach just yet." toby wasn't disturbed by joshua or his remarks. in fact, he didn't seem to care what joshua thought.
suddenly joshua looks at toby wide eyed. "oh, man, this is too good." he chuckles. "do me a favor, let me watch danika poison her with fear. i do enjoy them squirm." it was creepy watching his black eyes grow wide in excitement as if the mere thought of inflicting me with pain was the highest point in his life.
jashua stands up looking too pleased for comfort.
startled i turn around to see what made joshua get up all of a sudden although i was thankful he was distracted from wanting to kill me but when i looked behind me i could feel the blood disappearing from my cheeks.
it was danika looking more pissed than usual. "can someone please explain to me what in the hell she's doing here." she crosses her arms staring at toby in fury.
